Farming in the late 1800s, early 1900s was a lifestyle of hard work, inventions, prosperity, and depression. The Blakesburg Historical Preservation Society is hosting Rich Tyler, of the Humanities Iowa Speaker’s Bureau, to present his program “Your Grampa and Gramma’s Farm.” The program focuses on Joshua Secrest, a successful livestock farmer. Tyler has been restoring the Secrest farmstead and its 1883 octagonal barn, near West Branch. He’s researched the history of the property, lost during the Depression. His program also reviews the development of ingenious farm machinery and tools that enabled growth and prosperity. Farm tools are shared as part of the program. Some you won’t recognize.
The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served after the program.
The Blakesburg Historical Preservation Society received funding from the State Historical Society of Iowa, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting the heritage of Iowa, to host the program.
