James Gardner

James Gardner

James Gardner is one of three Civil War Medal of Honor recipients buried in Wapello County. Gardner was a free man who served in the 36th United States Colored Infantry and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the Battle of Chaffin's Farm. In the heat of battle, Gardner charged ahead of his brigade, shot a Confederate officer who was rallying his troops from the parapet, and then ran him through with his bayonet. He is laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery in Ottumwa.
