John Donaldson is one of three Civil War Medal of Honor recipients buried in Wapello County, Iowa. He served with distinction in the 4th Pennsylvania Cavalry during the American Civil War. Donaldson earned the Medal of Honor for his bravery at the Battle of Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865. The battle was the final engagement of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. During the battle, Donaldson captured the flag of the 4th Virginia Cavalry, a significant act of valor that contributed to the Union’s final victory.
He is laid to rest at Mars Hill Cemetery, located south of Ottumwa.
