Jonathan Woody, a Revolutionary War veteran, is buried in Dahlonega Cemetery, located northeast of Ottumwa. Born on June 15, 1756, in Surry County, North Carolina, he served as a private in the Continental Line during the American Revolution.
After the war, Woody relocated several times, eventually settling in Dahlonega, Georgia. In 1845, at the age of 89, he embarked on a remarkable journey, riding horseback from Georgia to Iowa to join his sons, William Berry and James, who had established a settlement named Dahlonega in Wapello County. He passed away on December 10, 1847, at the home of his son William and was buried in Dahlonega Cemetery.
Dahlonega Cemetery is located at the end of 109th ave behind private property. When you reach the end of the road, take a left and follow the grass around the field and pond and you will find the cemetery.
