Ottumwa's Unity Garden was created by the Ottumwa Leadership Academy Class of 2025 to celebrate the city’s rich multicultural community. The class collaborated with local organizations and artists to bring the garden to life.
Visitors enter the garden through an inspiring gateway marked by two murals created by local artist Nicki Wyldes. These vibrant works of art emphasize the theme of unity and set the tone for the experience within.
At the heart of the garden is a metal globe, crafted by students from Ottumwa High School, surrounded by a vibrant flower bed. Scattered throughout the garden are metal flowers—also made by the students—representing plants from countries reflected in Ottumwa’s diverse population. Each flower features a QR code linking to information about the plant and its cultural significance.
Colorful pavers painted by high school art students display flags and flowers from various cultures and countries represented in Ottumwa, further underscoring the garden’s message of inclusion and togetherness.
Multiple benches are placed throughout the garden, offering visitors a place to sit, relax, and enjoy the fresh air in this meaningful and welcoming space.
