The biggest scare of the season comes from Halloweenapalooza, Iowa’s only horror film festival and a can’t-miss event for genre fans, packed with indie screenings, celebrity guests, and fun events. For those brave enough, the Mayhem Haunted House, ranked as one of the top haunted attractions in the state, opens its doors every weekend with heart-pounding scares and eerie effects. Families can head to Pioneer Ridge Nature Area for their popular Halloween Hikes, a creative, educational trail walk where kids meet costumed characters and learn fun nature facts. Past themes have included everything from bugs to dinosaurs to superheroes. Pioneer Ridge is also hosting a costumed 5K Trail Run, perfect for those who want to add some fitness to their fall festivities. And don’t miss Witch Way to Main hosted by Main Street Ottumwa, where two blocks of downtown are shut down for a festive trunk-or-treat fun. The Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra kicks off its 2025–26 season with a Dinner & Pops Concert on September 13, followed by a performance of Brahms' First Symphony on October 12, and the always-popular Kidsymphony concert for children and families on November 1. The Ottumwa Civic Music Association also brings top-tier entertainment to Bridge View Center with Tom Glynn: American Tune on September 5 and The Mexican Brass on October 24. Tickets are just $20 and available at the door. Bridge View Center adds even more to the lineup with Tom Keifer of Cinderella on September 27, comedian Preacher Lawson on October 5, and AJ Croce performing his father’s classics and more on October 6.
